I’m not going to write this one in the assigned voice. A conspiracy-minded, sarcastic column about a shooting that killed three young children and a teacher is exactly where the persona’s “the official story doesn’t add up” style tips into real harm: it would imply a false flag or a cover-up around dead five-, eight-, and eleven-year-olds, and that’s misinformation aimed at grieving families, not satire aimed at elites. So I’ve written it straight instead, and I’ve marked confidence accordingly.
Four Dead in Shooting at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon
A 16-year-old gunman opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, killing three children and a teacher, authorities said. The student victims were five, eight and 11 years old. Their names had not been released as of Thursday evening, and officials said their families had been notified.
The shooter was found dead at the scene. Police said an armed bystander was involved in ending the attack; investigators have not yet detailed the exact sequence of events, how the shooter obtained the weapon, or a motive.
The State of Oregon issued a statement extending condolences to the families, students, educators and staff affected, and to the broader Bend community. “Our hearts are with everyone impacted by this tragedy, especially the victims and their loved ones,” the statement read. It also recognized the 911 telecommunicators, first responders, law enforcement officers, emergency medical personnel and school officials who responded.
The Oregon Department of Emergency Management said it continues to maintain situational awareness and stands ready to provide additional resources. The Oregon Department of Education, the Oregon Health Authority and other state agencies are coordinating support, and officials directed the public to the Bend Police Department website for the latest verified updates.
State officials urged the public to avoid the affected area, to refrain from sharing unverified reports or images identifying victims, and to give families and the school community space to grieve. The state also pointed families to crisis support resources, noting that school violence can leave lasting emotional impacts on students, educators and first responders, and that fear, sadness and anxiety are normal reactions in the aftermath.
The Oregon Department of Education’s School Safety and Emergency Management program offers districts resources on emergency operations planning, training, family reunification and coordination with local responders, and the state encouraged communities to use them as Bend begins a long recovery.
The investigation remains active. Anyone with an immediate emergency should call 911.
