The Media Screams ‘Coup’ While Buying Up Every Camera in the Country

So now the New Republic has finally found the courage to say what they’ve been saying since 2016 in slightly louder font: Trump is planning a coup. Bold stuff. Groundbreaking. A man who spent four years being called a dictator by every panel of experts CNN could round up is now, allegedly, about to become one for real this time, and they want you to believe they just figured it out.

Here’s what they’re actually reporting, underneath all the hyperventilating. The Washington Post says pro-Trump people are circulating a 17-page draft executive order that claims China interfered in the 2020 election, and that this would be used to declare a national emergency with new voting restrictions. Outlaw early voting by October 5. Kill mail-in ballots by October 13. Mandate voter ID by October 29. Postpone the election November 1.

Now, I’ve been around long enough to know that a “draft executive order being circulated by activists” is about as binding as a napkin sketch at a bar. People circulate drafts in Washington the way teenagers circulate rumors. Most of them go nowhere. But the New Republic treats this like it’s already signed, sealed, and delivered. Funny how a document nobody has verified, from people nobody has named, becomes ironclad proof the moment it fits the narrative.

And then there’s the media angle. David Ellison, CEO of Paramount Skydance, bid $111 billion to take over CBS and CNN, outbidding Netflix’s $83 billion offer. Netflix walked away. Ellison, who sat in the audience at Trump’s State of the Union, is now apparently the linchpin of the whole propaganda machine. The New Republic wants you to connect those dots and see a coordinated takeover. Maybe they’re right. Maybe they’re not. But I’ll tell you what I notice: the same people who spent years telling you that media consolidation was no big deal, that six companies owning everything you read and watch was just the free market at work, are suddenly clutching their pearls now that the wrong billionaire might be holding the remote.

Here’s the part the experts don’t want you to think about too hard. The intelligence community’s own report from March 2021 found that China “considered but did not deploy” influence efforts in 2020. The real foreign actor was Russia, pushing narratives about Biden and Ukraine. So the China premise in this draft order is a lie. But here’s the thing: the same intelligence apparatus that told us Hunter Biden’s laptop was Russian disinformation, that swore up and down the 2020 election was the most secure in history, that has been caught lying to Congress about surveillance more times than I can count, wants me to take their word on what China did or didn’t do in 2020. You’ll forgive me if I don’t take that to the bank.

The New Republic paints a scenario where Trump is at 29 percent in the polls, the economy is limping, Democrats are poised to take everything, and he pulls the emergency lever. It’s a vivid picture. It’s also exactly the kind of story the establishment always tells when they’re losing: the other side is about to do something unprecedented, so you’d better give us more power to stop them.

Norm Eisen, the legal expert they quote, says the Supreme Court would strike this down just like they struck down Trump’s tariff emergency powers. Fine. But the New Republic’s own timeline notes that it took the Court more than ten months to rule on tariffs. Ten months between Liberation Day and the actual decision. So even by their own reporting, the courts are slow and the executive branch moves fast. That’s not a Trump problem. That’s a system problem. That’s the swamp’s plumbing, and it’s been broken for decades.

You want to know what a real coup looks like? It looks like intelligence agencies cooking up narratives to bury stories before an election. It looks like media conglomerates deciding in lockstep what you’re allowed to see. It looks like billionaires outbidding each other to own the last independent newsrooms in the country. But when that happens, nobody at the New Republic writes a headline about it. They just call it Tuesday.

The draft executive order is a stunt. The media takeover is real. And the people screaming the loudest about democracy are the ones who’ve been selling it off piece by piece for years.
