Well, well, well. For years we were told mail voting was the devil’s own ballot box. Rigged. Stolen. Fraud on stilts. Every expert, every anchor, every blue-check scold in America lined up to tell you that questioning it made you a threat to democracy itself. Then Saturday happened, and Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that Republicans should vote “early, absentee, by mail, or in-person” and “swamp” the Democrats with turnout.
Read that again. The same man who spent four years saying mail ballots were riddled with fraud is now begging his own people to stuff the mailbox. And you know what? I don’t blame him for the flip. I blame the people who spent four years telling you the system was squeaky clean, then quietly went to court to make it harder to use.
Here’s the part the papers won’t spell out for you. Just last month the Trump administration went to the Supreme Court asking to hand the Postal Service unheard-of power to restrict and reject mail ballots. Think about that. A government agency that loses packages full of birthday cards was going to be the referee on which ballots count. The Court said no. But Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas said yes, with Alito writing in his dissent that the scheme would “enhance the visibility of Federal Ballot Mail” to better detect fraud. Two votes shy, folks. Two votes shy of the post office deciding whose ballot is real.
Now ask the barstool question: who benefits? Democrats vote by mail at much higher rates than Republicans. MIT’s own election lab counted 37 percent of Democrats voting by mail in 2024 against 24 percent of Republicans. So the party that mails the most ballots nearly got the agency that delivers them empowered to reject them. You don’t need a decoder ring to see the play. I’m not saying it was rigged. I’m saying when the same crowd that swears the game is clean keeps rewriting the rulebook in the fourth quarter, a sensible man starts keeping score at home.
And here’s the kicker Democracy Docket buried in the middle of its story: Republican trust in the Postal Service has cratered, precisely because Trump spent years telling them mail voting was crooked. So now he’s got to turn around and tell the same folks, never mind, the mailbox is safe after all, please hurry up and use it, the Democrats are coming. That’s not a strategy. That’s a man who trained his dog to bark at the mailman and now can’t get the dog to stop.
The polls say the Democrats’ odds of taking the House and Senate are improving, and that’s the only number that explains any of this. When the other side is winning the mail game, suddenly mail voting is patriotic again. When it wasn’t, it was fraud. The principle never changed. Only the scoreboard did.
So yes, the man reversed himself, and the usual crowd is cackling about hypocrisy. Let them. The real story isn’t that Trump flip-flopped. The real story is that for years the experts, the courts, and the media told you mail voting was beyond question, while one administration after another kept its hands hovering over the levers that decide which ballots survive the trip. Trump telling his people to vote by mail is the least suspicious thing that happened here. What should keep you up at night is how close the post office came to being the bouncer at the door.
Vote however you want. Mail it, walk it in, drag the whole family to the precinct. Just remember who told you the system was untouchable, and remember how fast they moved when the numbers went the wrong way.
