Two Old Men, Blindfolded, and Your Tax Dollars Paid for It

Let me tell you something. I have four kids. I pack their lunches, I check their homework, I sit through parent-teacher conferences where nobody says anything useful. I am a busy woman. But even I, with my limited time and my mom brain, can look at a photograph and tell you what I see.

What I see is two elderly men on their knees, blindfolded, with Israeli soldiers standing between them. Their names were Nadi Marouf and Ali Marouf. They were from Beit Lahia, in Gaza. The photo was taken in November 2024, hours before they were killed.

Now I want somebody to explain to me, slowly, like I’m one of my third graders, how two grandpa-aged men blindfolded in their underwear are a threat to one of the most heavily armed militaries on the planet.

Palestinian journalist Younis Tirawi published this image. He says troops from the 92nd Battalion of the Kfir Brigade abducted these men, held them as human shields for days, forced them to walk into buildings ahead of soldiers to check for booby traps, and then shot them. The Palestine Chronicle reported the same thing back in October 2025. The men were stripped, detained, released near a roundabout, and killed. Ramy Abdu, who runs the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor out of Geneva, said relatives found the bodies after three days.

And here is what really burns me. This is not a one-off. The Associated Press did a whole investigation. They talked to Palestinians who were forced into buildings and tunnels ahead of Israeli troops. They talked to Israeli soldiers who said, on the record, that this practice is widespread. Al Jazeera followed up with seven Palestinians and two Israeli military officers saying the same thing. The United Nations concluded that forcing civilians into houses ahead of soldiers is using human shields, which violates international humanitarian law.

The Israeli army itself admitted in May 2025 that it was investigating several cases. They said using Palestinians as human shields is “strictly prohibited” under their own orders. Oh, is that right? Strictly prohibited? Then why does it keep happening? Why does a photograph surface ten months later showing exactly that?

I’ll tell you why. Because nobody with power actually stops it. Because the money keeps flowing. Because every time something like this comes out, some spokesman in a nice suit gets up there and says they’re looking into it, and then nothing happens, and then another old man gets blindfolded.

Over 73,000 Palestinians dead since October 2023. The UN recorded 193 malnutrition deaths, 96 of them children. In July 2025 alone, nearly 12,000 kids screened showed acute malnutrition. Over 2,500 of those were severe. The UN projects more than 100,000 children could suffer acute malnutrition through October 2026.

I don’t know about you, but I did my own research on this. I read the reports. I looked at what the AP found, what Al Jazeera found, what the UN found. And I have a question for every single politician who votes to send another dime over there. What exactly are you funding? Because it is not defense. You don’t need to blindfold a grandfather and send him into a building first if you’re defending yourself. That is not what defense looks like. That is what cowardice looks like.

They think we are too busy carpooling and meal-planning to notice. They think we will just accept the official statement and move on. But I saw that photograph. And I will not move on.

Somebody needs to answer for Nadi Marouf and Ali Marouf. And the answer had better not be another press release.
